Mental Health

According to the CDC, mental health is our emotional, social and psychological well-being. It affects the way we think, act and feel, as well as how we react to stress and make healthy choices. Mental health is an important factor in every stage of life.

Physical health is extremely important and we have come to realize mental health is just as important. However, did you know that physical activity may also play an important role in our mental health? Past studies have already linked leisure-time physical activity to reduced mortality and extensive health benefits. In some cases, moderate activity has been more beneficial than high intensity activity. Depression and anxiety are often recurrent, lifelong disorders which come with substantial individual and societal costs. At the same time studies have shown exercise to be just as effective as therapeutic methodologies in mild to moderate depressive patients. Not only does it reduce symptoms of depression but it increases mood and creativity, enhances self esteem, cognitive function and quality of life while also offering beneficial cardiovascular and metabolic increases. Physical activity has also been linked to improved sleep, help with various psychiatric disorders and even shown to help with the management of cravings for substances. As a result, it can also be used adjunctly with pharmacological and psychological therapies.

In some cases, moderate activity has been more beneficial than high intensity activity. Activities like yoga which focus on breathing, self-awareness and relaxation have overall positive effects on our well being.
